Colorado has “interesting” weather. I’ve always called it bipolar, as in the manic/depressive type and not the north/south type. During our first year here, my father-in-law came for a visit. We went out for dinner and were wearing shorts. Upon exiting the restaurant, it was snowing. Truly, the temperature swings up and down like a pianist practicing their scales.
Last week was a reminder that it is time to change from Summer to Autumn. Monday, we were scheduled to pour the first layer of concrete inside the blocks. WHAM! Mother Nature hit a depressive spot. It snowed on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday. It didn’t snow on Thursday but we couldn’t get everyone’s schedules to agree. Friday brought a tad warmer weather. The team was ready for a 3 o’clock pour. And then the concrete company called. Due to the crazy weather earlier in the week, everyone was trying to pour on Friday. They couldn’t make it out to us until around 5-5:30pm. The sun goes down behind the mountain around 5 o’clock, so we rescheduled for Saturday.
Timeout for Hopscotch.
The concrete that goes inside the blocks isn’t the normal concrete that you would mix up. It has to be some special stuff with less gravel and kept quite runny. We hired Joe of Kodiak Concrete Pumping to do the work. It would have been quite impossible for us to pour without his equipment. The tubes were laid, the block was ready, the fabric was cut and the whole team was ready. Go!
Poured Concrete with GeoTex
The concrete has to cure for (at least) three days before we can put any dirt pressure on the walls. Additionally, I need to coat the outside with waterproofing. It’s a lot of work but we’re really excited.
